Becoming a TASO Referee

The Tarrant Soccer chapter of TASO is always looking for referees. If you enjoy the high school scene, have a way with teenagers, are registered with USSF as a Grade 8 or better, then you are an ideal candidate to help our high school players have fun on the pitch. To become a TASO NFHS referee in the Tarrant Chapter, you will need to do the following:
  • Register at one of our general meetings or by sending both registration forms, W9 and fee to our chapter secretary (Tarrant Reg , TASO Membership , W9 )
  • Learn the NFHS rules for soccer. We suggest attending as many of the meetings as possible planned for this coming season
  • Pass the NFHS test
  • Complete COPE training
  • Let our assignor know what your available schedule is
  • We also suggest that you obtain USSF Grade 8 certification. While not required by NFHS, our training program assumes that you are well versed in the basics of refereeing a soccer match. USSF grade 8 certification and experience at officiating matches will contribute significantly to your ability to officiate High School matches under the NFHS rules.

During your first season, you will be matched with experienced NFHS referees who will act as a mentor and provide feedback to the assignor on your abilities. Assignments will begin with roles as Assistant Referees for JV and Varsity matches, Centers or Duals on JV and then centers on Varsity matches. As in USSF, assignments are based on your ability.

To officiate post season matches, you will also need to do the following:
  • Be in good standing with Tarrant Chapter TASO-Soccer
  • Attend a minimum of two (2) scheduled Tarrant Chapter training sessions
  • Assist in a minimum of 15-Tarrant Chapter assigned UIL High School soccer matches
  • Successfully passed the the R-1 Physical Fitness Test
  • Successfully passed the Tarrant Chapter administered NFHS Soccer rules examination.
